On Monday of December 2nd, Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic Denis Pushilin came up with a proposal to introduce amendments into the DPR Constitution, in accordance with which Russian shall be adopted as the official language of the Donetsk People’s Republic, the press service of the DPR People’s Council informs.

The Head of State proposes amending Article 10 of the Constitution of the Donetsk People’s Republic, adopting Russian as the only state language in the Republic. He also introduced for consideration by the People’s Council a draft law with amendments to the Law of the Donetsk People’s Republic On Education in terms of establishing the language of education. This necessity comes from the intensive integration process of the Donetsk People’s Republic with the Russian Federation.

We shall remind you that according to the DPR Constitution, the state languages in the DPR are Russian and Ukrainian. At the same time, the use of the Russian language is declared by a number of laws and regulations of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The proposed amendments to the DPR Law On Education imply that the study of the state language shall remain compulsory, while Ukrainian and other languages will be taught taking into account the wishes of parents and the resources of an educational organization.

Making these amendments to the Constitution of the Donetsk People’s Republic will also require adjusting other laws and regulations.
