I welcome the introduction by the People’s Council of an amendment to Article 10 of the Republic’s Constitution regarding the designation of the Russian language as the only language with a State status.

The need to adopt an amendment to the Basic Law of the Country is long overdue, since the use of the Ukrainian language as the State language has not found any practical use. Besides, Russian is the native language for most residents of the Donetsk People’s Republic as the majority of Donbass population do not just speak it, but think in it.

Along with the amendment to the Constitution, there were adopted amendments to the Law on Education. In accordance with them, along with the compulsory study of the state language, those willing will be given the opportunity to study their native language, be it Ukrainian or any other language.

The Russian language is the core of our culture, it is our dearly paid achievement, and today it has rightfully received appropriate State status.

Denis Pushilin,
Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic
