The work of the Public Commission for assessing the economic damage caused by Ukraine is of tremendous importance for the residents of Donbass, a member of the commission and human rights lawyer Sergei Kozhemyakin stated such an opinion in an interview with a correspondent of the DPR official website.
“The activities of the Public Commission for assessing the economic damage caused by Ukraine is of utmost importance for residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. In the course of the Commission’s work, we, lawyers, form packages of documents and prepare claims to be submitted to the European Court of Human Rights. In these claims, we seek to reimburse the damage Ukraine caused to Donbass residents by shelling their houses,” Kozhemyakin emphasized.
He added that these claims are an important mechanism in restoring the breeched rights of citizens of the DPR and LPR.
“We cannot appeal to Ukrainian courts directly. Therefore, the ECHR today is the only body that can exert influence on Ukraine, because it is a party that has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights,” the lawyer concluded.
As will be recalled, since the second half of November this year Donbass residents have begun to apply to the ECHR with requirements to reimburse the economic damage caused by Ukraine. Subsequently, a Public Commission has been established to assess the economic damage caused by Ukraine.
