President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky instructed that a concept of memorial to Ukrainian heroes be worked out, DPR People’s Council deputy Oleg Onopko commented on his decision.
“The current president of Ukraine continues to wage an aggressive, cynical and unprincipled war of memory that his predecessors unleashed. At the level of state policy, they glorify Ukrainian nationalists of all times, they establish historical, symbolic and ideological continuity between the state project of Stepan Bandera and the modern Ukraine. These actions by Vladimir Zelensky are logical and understandable, since only Ukrainian nationalism can explain why Ukraine exists outside the borders of the Russian world as a separate state on the political map of the world.
The creation of the memorial will lead to a deepening breakup in Ukrainian society, an even greater alienation of Russian and Russian-cultured people from the Ukrainian statehood, the intensification of covert protest sentiments and a decrease in the level of legitimacy of power.
I am sure that such actions by president Zelensky will once again show the residents of the Russian-speaking regions whom they actually chose to lead,” Oleg Onopko said.
