Today, on January 22, in Donetsk there took place a scheduled meeting of the Commission on Economic Issues of the DPR Public Chamber, in the course of which the introduction of a new environmental project was considered. According to the correspondent of the Official Website of the Donetsk People’s Republic, this project proposes measures to organize sorting, separate collection and removal of municipal solid waste, which will significantly improve the environmental situation in the Republic.
“Another aspect of the Public Chamber’s work is the support of civic initiatives. We were approached by an initiative group engaged in the environmental development. They are concerned about the problem of solid waste disposal and have come up with a proposal to start separate garbage collection in one of the districts of Donetsk. Their proposal suggests to install additional containers for collecting waste of organic and inorganic origin. This front is actively developing in the Russian Federation, and, I believe, this is a good and effective idea that will solve a number of environmental problems. We are hopeful that this project will be implemented,” Ekaterina Martyanova, the Deputy Chairperson of the DPR Public Chamber, said.
According to Irina Papa-Dmitriyeva, a member of the Green Donbass initiative group, it is planned to tentatively introduce this project in the territory of the Kuibyshevsky district of Donetsk.
“It is aimed at improving the ecological and aesthetic condition of the city and its environs, rational use of personnel and financial resources, involvement of secondary resources in circulation, drawing public attention to the problems of environmental pollution caused by household waste,” she said.
For his part, Valery Litvinov, the Head of the Housing and Utilities Services Department of the Donetsk City Council, noted the relevance of this proposal and stated confidence in the need for its implementation:
“This is quite a topical issue. If the process evolves normally, the amount of landfills and solid waste collection will decrease sharply.”
